Frequently asked questions

Below are the most frequently asked questions and answers about fluxDVD itself, fluxDVD usage and known issues.

General

What exactly is the fluxDVD format?

FluxDVD is a new, patented container format that represents a whole DVD with the complete DVD feature set like navigation, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, video angles, seamless branching, anamorphic video (16:9/4:3), etc. in a single, highly compressed file.

You can play a fluxDVD on the PC in Windows Media Player, Windows media Center or other Direct Show based players. If the DRM license permits, you can burn a fluxDVD to DVD to get a 100% compatible Video DVD that plays in every hardware or software DVD player.

FluxDVD is based on code and specification originally developed at Danish Aarhus University.  To archive the DVD like quality and the original DVD sound, fluxDVD utilizes full resolution H.264 high profile video encoding and original Dolby AC-3 sound.

Additionally a fluxDVD can contain tagging, cover and label data to enable you to create a cover for the DVD as if you had bought it in a store.

Are DVDs burned from fluxDVD different than any other Video DVD?

A Video DVD burned from a fluxDVD file has all the features of the original DVD as bought in a store. You may even create original DVD covers and label art based on the original artwork stored in the fluxDVD file.

How does DRM and fluxDVD work?

Typically fluxDVD files purchased online use a Windows Media DRM compatible rights management system. When such a file is purchased, an individual license is generated which controls the playback and burning to DVD.

Depending on this license the playback may be limited (e.g. in time) or the burning to DVD may be restricted (e.g. limited to one recording).

Although fluxDVD itself does not include any copy protection technology it is typically combined with Recordable DVD copy protection systems such as SecureBurn from German Protect Software GmbH which prevent unauthorized copies of created DVDs.

What is the minimum system requirement for using fluxDVD?

Due to the high quality of a fluxDVD, you need a fast computer. Typically a 2.4 GHz Windows XP PC with 512 MB RAM is a recommended system but slower systems may work also. In order to burn the fluxDVD you also need a DVD-Recorder.

If you are not sure about your computer you can try out the free sample fluxDVD file from this site.

What copy protection is used for the burned DVDs?

The copy protection to be used is specified in the DRM license. Currently supported is SecureBurn and recordable CSS. SecureBurn is the preferred choice for home burning since it requires no special hardware and special recordable DVDs and has a higher playback compatibility than recordable CSS. Recordable CSS is mainly used for Kiosk systems and hardware supporting this is expected to be available in 2008.

Are there any known compatibility issues with SecureBurn DVDs ?

No. SecureBurn DVDs are 100% compatible with every soft- or hardware DVD Player that can read recordable DVDs. Independent quality verification tests have been performed by PMTC, a leading DVD quality control service and former Philips subsidiary.

Are there any known compatibility issues with Recordable CSS?

Recordable CSS requires special burners and recordable DVDs which are planned to be available in 2008. Compatibility testing carried out by the DVD forum shows some compatibility problems mainly on DVD Recorders.

How about using SecureBurn and Recordable CSS together ?

In case the hardware supports Recordable CSS it is no problem and recommened to use SecureBurn and Recordable CSS together for the same DVD.
