When people today think of premium content – the content they would spend money for – they think of DVDs and BluRay discs.
With Flux Solutions it is for the first time possible for online video distribution services to compete eye-to-eye with these packaged media products .
Premium Content Experience
DVDs and BluRay discs are more than just the linear movie that was common in VHS days – it is about menus, navigation, bonus materials, multiple audio tracks, directors commentary, multiple subtitles, video angles, seamless branching for having multiple versions of the movie on the same disc, wide screen, full screen, anamorphic encoding – and much more.
Interestingly, online video delivery today, with WMV or Flash, is much more like VHS than like DVD or BluRay. The user has the option to pause, rewind or skip forward – that’s it.
Only FluxDVD delivers exactly the same features and gives the user exactly the premium experience he is used to getting from DVD or BluRay.
Watch in the living room
Watching a DVD or even BluRay disc is straight forward. Everyone has a DVD-Player in the living room and everyone knows the “use case” of inserting the disc and starting the movie. You can even take your movie with you and watch in your friends house – no problem.
With online video today it is much more complicated. While most interested users have an internet connection to their PC, there is typically none into the living room. But even if there is – who has a PC or a different device there to consume the content? Who wants to add another device just to be able to do what he can do anyways with the existing DVD-Player?
FluxDVD and FluxWMV connect online delivery with the living room by offering the ability to burn the movie copy protected to a regular DVD-R that can be watched with every DVD-Player.
Watch everywhere and on any device
For watching DVDs on-the-go there are portable DVD Players and many newer DVDs come with “digital copy” options that enable the transfer of digital files from DVDs to portable devices like iPods, portable media players or even mobile phones.
With online video today, DRM protected WMV or Flash files can not be transcoded and used on portable devices with different video and DRM systems – the user is again bound to the PC or to special devices for special services.
FluxDVD and FluxWMV overcome this problem by offering a universal format and DRM transcoding solution making FluxDVD files compatible with almost any device capable of video playback available today.
"Owning" isn't the same for the online and packaged media
The idea of “owning” DVDs or BluRay discs is very simple and very successful – there is a tangible media and you can use it as long as it doesn’t become corrupted and a player is available.
However, for online delivery the concept of “owning” is not that simple. First, there is usually nothing tangible, which is a very big change. Secondly, typical usage window for content that is bound by DRM to PCs is much smaller, can break without the user “touching” the content (e.g. by hardware changes) and last but not least has negative feelings due to many “discontinued” DRM offerings.
FluxDVD and FluxWMV solve this problem by providing the ability for copy protected burning of the purchased movie to regular DVD-R media that play back in every DVD-Player. In addition, the FluxDVD mpDRM system is much more flexible than traditional WMV or Flash based solutions in terms of license transfer and storage.
