For Developers

APIX is used for information exchange between different processes running locally or in web applications. For this purpose applications can define a set of properties bound to a unique identifier which can be retrieved and optionally set in web pages by using JavaScript.

Using APIX from local Applications

An application that wants to exchange information with JavaScript embedded into a web page can create the computer global APIX object and query an Information Object from it. An Information Object represents a collection of properties for a unique identifier. The application can create properties with the type string, integer and float. Each property can be made accessible system wide or on a per user base. Furthermore each property can be made writable from the browser integration objects. An application will be notified of changes that occur to any writable property. Additionally any property can be defined as being persistent which enables the application to save status information which is available even if the application is not currently running.

Using APIX from JavaScript on Web Pages

A web page that wants to present (or modify) information present in APIX can embed an ActiveX object for Microsoft Internet Explorer or an Mozilla Plugin for Mozilla browsers like Firefox. This JavaScript accessible object enables the web page to query information of any locally defined Information Objects. If a property allows write access for web pages, this property can also be modified via JavaScript.
